• Mainz beat Hoffenheim 5-1 earlier this season.
  • Die Nullfünfer won each of their last two meetings with Hoffenheim
  • The last eight games between these teams averaged 5.25 goals per 90 minutes.
  • Both teams scored in seven of those fixtures.

Relegation threat remains for Mainz

Mainz let a chance to grab three precious points slip through their fingers on Wednesday evening when they were held to a 1-1 draw at 10-man Union Berlin – a result that leaves the Die Nullfünfer just one point and one place clear of the bottom three.

Having had a one-man advantage for over half the game in the capital, Mainz were unable to make their superior numbers count, and they might have even lost the game altogether had keeper Florian Muller not made an excellent save late on to deny Union hitman Sebastian Andersson.

The draw pushed Mainz’s search for a win to four matches, though the relegation candidates record of just two defeats in eight Bundesliga matches overall since early February suggests that they are fighting hard to maintain their top-flight status.

Mainz promising record against Hoffenheim

On Saturday, Mainz host Hoffenheim at the OPEL ARENA, and having smashed their visitors 5-1 in the reverse meeting between the pair in November, they will feel that more points are on offer in the weekend’s re-match.

Hoffenheim, inspired by the sparkling performance of Christophe Baumgartner, warmed up for Saturday’s tussle with a fine 3-1 win over Cologne – a triumph that ended a dismal run of seven games without a win.

However, Die Kraichgauer will be wary of the dangers of overconfidence when they face a Mainz side that turned them over in each of their last two encounters, scoring nine times in the process.

Mainz’s thumping win at the Rhein-Neckar-Arena last year was their second biggest win of the 2019/20 campaign, and the result was made all the more impressive by the fact that they played the entire second half with ten men, hitting four of their five goals with a player less than their opponents.

A game that delivers goals

In fact, games between Mainz and Hoffenheim have been among the most goal-laden Bundesliga fixtures in recent seasons. Incredibly, the last eight clashes between the clubs averaged a staggering 5.25 goals per 90 minutes.

The clubs’ last four head-to-heads at the OPEL ARENA produced an even meatier 5.75 goals per game, and with a well-established history of high-scoring encounters in this fixture, backing over 2.5 goals with both teams to score is a smart move for their latest clash, while our correct score prediction points towards a 3-2 home win.

Mainz got the better of Hoffenheim in convincing fashion in each of their last two meetings, running up an aggregate score of 9-3 along the way. That November 5-1 battering should be fresh enough in the minds of the respective players to have an impact on proceedings, and the hosts should come out on top in another goal-filled battle.
