New England Revolution may have lost their season opener away to Philadelphia Union, but overall they enjoyed a rather successful start to the new MLS season. They won three of their opening five games, and that 2-0 defeat in Philadelphia wasn’t added to until over a month later. Now, however, the wheels have started to wobble.
The weekend saw them play out a thrilling 3-3 draw away to Vancouver Whitecaps, but they have only won two of their last seven games in the MLS and have lost three times during that period. This has seen them drop down to a precarious 6th position in the Eastern Conference, just three points inside the playoff zone. Considering they missed the post season by a single position last year, they will be determined to avoid a repeat of that.
Now, Revolution come up against one of the newest teams in the MLS, and they’re not a side they have particularly fond memories of. Atlanta United were only established in the MLS at the start of last season, but just six months later they demolished New England Revolution 7-0 in their first ever meeting, following that with a goalless draw at the Gillette Stadium a few weeks later.
This year, Atlanta United have improved even further. They did lose at home to New York Red Bulls at the weekend, but they remain top of the MLS Eastern Conference, ahead of Columbus Crew on goal difference and having two games in hand on the 2nd placed side. Things are certainly looking bright for the entertaining visitors.
They have won eight of their 12 league games this season and scored an impressive 26 goals in the process, and whilst two of their three defeats have come in the last few weeks both came on home soil. Away from home Atlanta United have won four games on the trot now, with their sole defeat coming back on the opening weekend of the season against Houston Dynamo.
All things considered, the odds for an Atlanta United win look very appealing. New England Revolution have already lost twice at home this season and now face the best away side in the MLS, so we’re backing that along with a 2-1 correct score predictions.
In addition, we’re going for Josef Martinez to find the net for our anytime goalscorer predictions. The 25 year old Venezuelan has been a revelation since moving to Atlanta United last season, scoring 27 goals in his 33 MLS appearances so far. Eight of those have come in his 12 games this year, so he looks a great choice to score.
New England Revolution Predicted Lineup: Turner, Mlinar, Anibaba, Farrell, Bye, Tierney, Caicedo, Caldwell, Fagundez, Bunbury, Penilla
Atlanta United Predicted Lineup: Guzan, Robinson, Parkhurst, Gonzalez, Gressel, Zizzo, Nagbe, Larentowicz, Almiron, Barco, Martinez
