7 points currently separate these sides in the Swedish Second tier standings. Halmstad are going reasonably well in 5th and will be determined to take full advantage of this match given they have a game in hand on all of the current top three. Their opponents meanwhile are just one point and one place above the drop-zone as the season now heads into the middle phase.
Varberg would probably settle for that come the end of the season although clearly they’d rather avoid such a nerve-jangling campaign. They avoided a relegation play-off last term only courtesy of goal difference and in truth there have been few signs to suggest they are any better equipped to avoid a season of struggle this time around.
Halmstad on the other hand were relegated from the Allsvenskan last term, winning just five times all season. They will be desperate for an immediate return to the top table of Swedish football, where they feel they do belong having being crowned Swedish champions four times, the first of which was way back in 1976 when a young Roy Hodgson was their manager.
The visitors are certainly the form team heading into this one and they look capable of getting the win. Halmstad have won 4 of their last 5 matches and are unbeaten in 6 following on from a pretty poor start to the season. They appear to have found their feet now though and it’s worth noting that 10 of their 17 points so far have come away from home.
With a 60% win ratio on their travels, they’ve no reason to fear a trip to struggling opposition and they perhaps should be a little bit shorter for the win. Varberg have struggled to find the net at home, averaging just 0.8 goals per game in front of their own fans. They’ve lost 60% of their home matches so far and that includes their two most recent outings at Påskbergsvallen.
Those games were both against sides that are currently below Halmstad in the standings and we certainly have reason to think backing an Away Win is the way to go here.
Halmstad are a side that seems to have a liking for a 3-1 victory on their travels. 4 of their last 6 competitive away victories have been by that margin so going for a 3-1 Halmstad Win could be worth a punt too.

Halmstad won both of the most recent meetings in the 2016 Superettan. They’d not met since 2012 prior to that.
